Gabriele Jutz is a film and media scholar. Since 1993, she has held various academic positions at the University of Applied Arts Vienna and became a Professor of Film and Media Studies in the Department of Media Theory in 2009. Her educational background includes an MA and a PhD from the University of Salzburg, as well as a Diplôme d’études approfondies (DEA) in Film Studies from Université Sorbonne Nouvelle – Paris 3. She has been a Visiting Professor of Film Studies at Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main and Freie Universität Berlin, and has taught film and media studies at the Universities of Vienna, Salzburg, and Graz, as well as at Danube University Krems.
She is the author of The Films of Maria Lassnig and Their Context (2019) and of Cinéma brut. Eine alternative Genealogie der Filmavantgarde (Springer, 2010). She also co-edited RESET THE APPARATUS! A Survey of the Photographic and the Filmic in Contemporary Art (De Gruyter, 2019) with Edgar Lissel and Nina Jukić, and Peter Kubelka (PVS, 1995; in German) with Peter Tscherkassky.
Her articles have appeared in academic journals and edited volumes, including The Palgrave Handbook of Experimental Cinema, edited by Kim Knowles and Jonathan Walley (2024); Handbuch Filmanalyse, edited by Malte Hagener and Volker Pantenburg (2020); and The Oxford Handbook of Sound and Image in Western Art, edited by Yael Kaduri (2016). She has also presented her research at numerous international conferences.
